"Lucky" is the second single from Pop singer Britney Spears' album Oops!... I Did It Again. It was released during the third quarter of 2000.
The song was primarily written and produced by Max Martin and Rami, and is about an actress, who despite being very "lucky" and seemingly having it all - fame, wealth, beauty, is truly lonely on the inside for unknown reasons ("If there's nothing missing in my life, then why do these tears come at night?").
Lucky lyrics:
This is a story about a girl named Lucky…
Early morning, she wakes up
Knock, knock, knock on the door
It’s time for makeup, perfect smile
It’s you they’re all waiting for
They go…
“Isn’t she lovely, this Hollywood girl?”
And they say…
[CHORUS:]
She’s so lucky, she’s a star
But she cry, cry, cries in her lonely heart, thinking
If there’s nothing missing in my life
Then why do these tears come at night
Lost in an image, in a dream
But there’s no one there to wake her up
And the world is spinning, and she keeps on winning
But tell me what happens when it stops?
They go…
“Isn’t she lovely, this Hollywood girl?”
And they say…
[Repeat CHORUS]
“Best actress, and the winner is…Lucky!”
“I’m Roger Johnson for Pop News standing outside the arena waiting for Lucky”
“Oh my god…here she comes!”
Isn’t she lucky, this Hollywood girl?
She is so lucky, but why does she cry?
If there’s nothing missing in her life
Why do tears come at night?
[repeat chorus twice]
Music video
Directed by Dave Meyers in Orlando, FL, the music video for Lucky starts out with Britney as a narrator of a play showing the life of a very famous Hollywood actress named Lucky (also played by Spears). The curtains part to reveal a big billboard with Lucky on it. We see Lucky and her mansion as well. As beautiful and rich as she is, we see her about a set as she is acting looking quite distressed. Through this scene, the narrator Spears also sits above in the 'stars', throwing down glittery sparkles. Next, we find Lucky having her make-up put on and then at the Academy Awards accepting her Oscar ("Best actress, and the winner is Lucky!"). Lucky looks very, very happy as she accepts the Oscar and smiles at her fans, but it is not true happiness. As she makes her way away from her screaming fans and back into her limo, she catches a glimpse of the narrator Spears in the crowd, and also becomes distressed again. The video ends with Lucky crying herself to sleep, her make-up already stained. The curtains close, ending the video.
To this date, Lucky is Britney's most successful video as far as Total Request Live (TRL) on MTV is concerned.
Parodies
- MADtv did a Parody of the song featuring Hillary Clinton, in the parody Clinton sings of her Senate campaign. It was called "F***ing lucky".
The Single
The standard 3 track single was imported from The Netherlands and includes 3 tracks and a track which wasn't included on the original US album of Oops!... I Did It Again. The single also includes a remix of Lucky.
Chart performance
Though not nearly as successful as the title-track lead single from Oops!... I Did It Again, Lucky still achieved moderate success. The song peaked at number twenty-three on the Billboard Hot 100 thanks to its top twenty placement on the Hot 100 Airplay chart. However, like several previous singles released by Britney, "Lucky" did not have the sales of a regular CD single to aid it on the charts. The song also only managed to spend a short eleven weeks on the Hot 100, with only six within the top forty.
Lucky was moderately successful at Top 40 radio, making the top twenty of the Top 40 Tracks and Rhythmic Top 40, as well as top ten of the Mainstream Top 40.
The single also made top ten placement in many European nations, as well as Australia, where it actually ended up selling more than the previous single.
In New Zealand the single peaked at number four, despite strong sales. This is because, at the time, the singles chart was composed of 75% airplay statistics and 25% sales figure. Therefore, despite selling more than 15,000 copies (Spears' most successful single after Baby One More Time), the song only reached top-five.
Lucky sold a total of 203,000 copies in the UK earning a silver BPI award. The single has sold worldwide 3.914.000 copies.
