Overprotected

PDF
bs_overprotected.jpg"Overprotected" is a pop-dance song by American pop singer Britney Spears released from the album Britney. It was the second single released during the first quarter of 2002 internationally released in Europe, and third single released in the U.S. in 2002.

The song is another product of the pop songwriting and producing team made up of Max Martin and Rami, though the "Darkchild Remix" version of the song was produced by Rodney Jerkins. The single was released in its original state internationally in Europe, but as the "Darkchild Remix" in the U.S. Thus, there were two different music videos released to promote the song. Britney declares in the song that she is "overprotected" and explains to the world that she cannot find out who she is, where she needs to go and what she needs to do if she is restricted from certain experiences.

In 2003, Spears was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for the song but lost to Norah Jones's "Don't Know Why".

Britney Spears Overprotected Lyrics :

[Spoken:]
I need time (time)
Love (love)
Joy (joy)
I need space
I need me
(Action!)

Say hello to the girl that I am!
You’re gonna have to see through my perspective
I need to make mistakes just to learn who I am
And I don’t wanna be so damn protected
There must be another way
Cause I believe in taking chances
But who am I to say
What a girl is to do
God, I need some answers

What am I to do with my life
(You will find it out don’t worry)
How Am I supposed to know what’s right?
(You just got to do it your way)
I can’t help the way I feel
But my life has been so overprotected

I tell ‘em what I like
What I want
What I don’t
But every time I do I stand corrected
Things that I’ve been told
I can’t believe what I hear about the world, I realize
I’m Overprotected

There must be another way
Cause I believe in taking chances
But who am I to say
What a girl is to do
God I need some answers

What am I to do with my life
(You will find it out don’t worry)
How Am I supposed to know what’s right?
(You just got to do it your way)
I can’t help the way I feel
But my life has been so overprotected

I need… time (love)
I need… space
(This is it, this is it)

I don’t need nobody’s
Tellin me just what I wanna
What I what what what I’m gonna
Do about my destiny
I Say No, No
Nobody’s telling me just what what what I wanna do, do
I’m so fed up with people telling me to be
Someone else but me

(Action!)

What am I to do with my life
(You will find it out don’t worry)
How Am I supposed to know what’s right?
(You just got to do it your way)
I can’t help the way I feel
But my life has been so overprotected

I don’t need nobody’s
Tellin me just what I wanna
What I what what what I’m gonna
Do about my destiny
I Say No, No
Nobody’s telling me just what I wanna do, do
I’m so fed up with people telling me to be
Someone else but me

What am I to do with my life
(You will find it out don’t worry)
How Am I supposed to know what’s right?
(You just got to do it your way)
I can’t help the way I feel
But my life has been so overprotected.

International Video

For the release of the original version of the song internationally, Spears reunited with director Billie Woodruff ("Born to Make You Happy").

The music video for Overprotected begins with Britney driving away from the intrusive media, with a part of the instrumental version of the song "Bombastic Love" featured on the album Britney. She makes her way into an alleyway, and decides to enter an abandoned factory, hoping her pursuers will be thrown off course. When she enters the building she begins to dance her way around the warehouse. Britney's dancers spotted her walking into the factory and followed inside. They find Britney dancing around and joke about it, before heading into a heavy dance routine. Towards the end of the video, we see segments of Britney in a room with walls covered in pictures and articles about herself. These walls move in and out before the video ends, signifying that she is Overprotected.

In the video Spears uses clothes of the Argentine company/signature “Kosiuko” , according to is known, she decided to use this clothes in its video because it felt very to taste with her. The clothes were given to the singer by the proprietors of the mark, with the reason to promote their products in the American market, since recently they had opened to own houses in Miami and other cities of the country.

Darkchild Video

For the release of Overprotected [The Darkchild Remix] version of the song in the U.S., the video was directed by Chris Applebaum. It starts out with Britney watching the news in a hotel, when a negative story about her comes up. Britney calls down to her bodyguard to create a decoy so she and her girl friends can make their exit. Britney and her friends rush in an elevator, where they fool around briefly with the security cameras. A dance scene in the main lobby of the building proceeds. After this, Spears makes her way into her SUV.

The interior transforms itself into a limo like dance hall, and Britney and her friends begin to dance and grind. Making their way to a destination in an alleyway, it begins to rain down on Spears and her friends. Now wet, the group dances suggestively. We also see a powerful sequence in the lobby, with strobe lights, and Britney dancing fiercely. At the end of the video, we discover that Spears and her friends dancing in the rain was the latest news story being reported on the TV.

The video faced minor controversy as it is similar in setting to the music video of Janet Jackson's "Son of a Gun (I Betcha Think This Song Is About You)." Still, it was as popular as any of Britney's previous efforts, and the video retired itself on MTV's TRL.

Due to the public demand, the "Darkchild Remix" version of the video was aired on MTV Latinamerica and the song entered on the Official Mexican Top 100 even when the official single there was charting too.

Chart performance

Despite being given a harder remix to tailor to the U.S. market, "Overprotected (The Darkchild Remix)" reached a disappointing peak of number eighty-six on the Billboard Hot 100. Though the track failed to chart on the Hot 100 Airplay, it still had managed to chart on the Hot 100 as it was released as 'airplay-only'.

The story was the same at Top 40 radio, as the song failed to chart on either the Top 40 Tracks or Rhythmic Top 40, though it did make it into the lower reaches of the Mainstream Top 40.

At this point in Spears' career, "Overprotected" was probably only second to "Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know" in terms of least international success. Although it wasn't a complete flop, it missed the top ten in most countries. It was received well in the United Kingdom debuting at five and moving up to four in its second week. The single sold 124,000 copies. The single has sold worldwide 2 milions copies.
