"Born to Make You Happy" is the fourth European single from American pop singer Britney Spears' debut album, ...Baby One More Time. In Canada and Europe, among other regions, it was released during the fourth quarter of 1999.
Composed in the key of B minor, the song was written by Andreas Carlsson and Kristian Lundin, and was also produced by the latter. In this mid-tempo ballad, Spears recalls a relationship she desires to correct, not quite understanding what went wrong as she comes to the realisation that she was "born to make you happy."
The CD single released a 'Demo' version of the track, calling it a "Bonus Remix." The track contains completely alternate vocals and more of an acoustic take of the track. This alternate recording shows off Spears' vocals.
Lyrics for: Born To Make You Happy
I’m sitting here alone up in my room
And thinking about the times that we’ve been through (oh my love)
I’m looking at a picture in my hand
Trying my best to understand
I really want to know what we did wrong
With a love that felt so strong
If only you were here tonight
I know that we could make it right
[CHORUS:]
I don’t know how to live without your love
I was born to make you happy
‘Cause you’re the only one within my heart
I was born to make you happy
Always and forever you and me
That’s the way our life should be
I don’t know how to live without your love
I was born to make you happy
I know I’ve been a fool since you’ve been gone
I’d better give it up and carry on (oh my love)
‘Cause living in a dream of you and me
Is not the way my life should be
I don’t want to cry a tear for you
So forgive me if I do
If only you were here tonight
I know that we could make it right
[Repeat CHORUS]
I’d do anything, I’d give you my world
I’d wait forever, to be your girl
Just call out my name, and I will be there
Just to show you how much I care
[Repeat CHORUS]
Music video
The original concept was to portray Spears in a dream, lamenting over her ex-lover, to who she was secretly pregnant with their child, but Jive immediately withdrew the idea once it was leaked to the public and received negative reception. Directed by Billie Woodruff in Los Angeles, the music video for "Born to Make You Happy" begins with a shot of Spears sleeping. In her dream she is sitting in a futuristic room with several different levels. Following this part of the video, Spears appears atop the apartment building where this room is found, performing a dance segment in a red top and black skirt. The last part of the dream has her love interest come to her room to see her. The video concludes with the pair having a pillow fight. The radio edit of the song was used for the video, it shortenes two instrumental bridges, one in the middle of the song, and the other one towards the end.
