From the Bottom of My Broken Heart

bs_ftbombroken_heart.jpg"From the Bottom of My Broken Heart" is the fifth and final single (fourth in the U.S. and Australia) from pop singer Britney Spears first album ...Baby One More Time. It was released during the first quarter of 2000.

The song was written and produced by Eric Foster White. In this melancholy love ballad, Spears recalls her first love and how she wishes it hadn't ended, as her true emotions are revealed "from the bottom of my broken heart." The song was excluded from Spears' greatest hits album Greatest Hits: My Prerogative, for reasons unknown.

From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart

“Never look back,” we said
How was I to know I’d miss you so?
Loneliness up ahead, emptiness behind
Where do I go?

And you didn’t hear
All my joy through my tears
All my hopes through my fears
Did you know, still I miss you somehow

[CHORUS:]
From the bottom of my broken heart
There’s just a thing or two I’d like you to know
You were my first love, you were my true love
From the first kisses to the very last rose
From the bottom of my broken heart
Even though time may find me somebody new
You were my real love, I never knew love
‘Til there was you
From the bottom of my broken heart

“Baby,” I said, “please stay.
Give our love a chance for one more day”
We could have worked things out
Taking time is what love’s all about

But you put a dart
Through my dreams through my heart
And I’m back where I started again
Never thought it would end

[Repeat CHORUS]

You promised yourself
But to somebody else
And you made it so perfectly clear
Still I wish you were here

[Repeat CHORUS]

“Never look back,” we said
How was I to know I’d miss you so?

Music video

Directed by Gregory Dark, the music video for From the Bottom of My Broken Heart begins with Spears packing her belongings as she readies herself to move away from home. She is upset because she knows that she is going to miss her first love. Throughout the video, we see scenes of the two from their past, including one where they climb up onto a windmill. Towards the ending, we see Spears waiting at a bus stop while at the same time her first love is driving quickly to come see her one last time. However, by the time he finally gets there, she has already left on her bus. The video premiered on an episode of Muchmusic's Combat Zone. The video also became her fourth to retire on MTV's TRL. This is the first video where no dance is involved. The radio edit of the song was used for the video, it shortenes the intro and removes a double chorus in the second part of the song.

The Single

The Australian release of the single included bonus stickers and Thinkin' About You as a bonus tracks but was released on the album for ...Baby One More Time. The US single included the album version and a bonus remix of (You Drive Me) Crazy also with enhanced video clips if you put the CD in your PC CD ROM, it was also released in Israel.

Chart performance

"From the Bottom of My Broken Heart" peaked within the top twenty of the Billboard Hot 100 thanks to its chart-topping placement on the Hot 100 Singles Sales; this would later lead to a Platinum certification. However, for the first time for a Spears single, airplay proved weak, and the track failed to crack even the top fifty of the Hot 100 Airplay. The single was later ranked at number seventy-seven on the Billboard Hot 100 Year-End chart for 2000. The single sold over 1 million copies in the U.S.A and has been certificated platinum.

Top 40 radio airplay was also considerably weaker this time around, as the single missed out on the top ten of all three charts: the Top 40 Tracks, Mainstream Top 40 and Rhythmic Top 40.

As "Born to Make You Happy" had just been released in most international markets, "My Broken Heart" was released in only a couple of other regions, one of which was Australia, where her local record company were given the choice between "Born To Make You Happy" and "My Broken Heart". They plumped for the latter, probably unwisely, as it just barely made it into the top forty there, while "Born To Make You Happy" was a commercial hit in the UK.
