"Give It 2 Me" is the second single by American singer-songwriter Madonna from her eleventh studio album Hard Candy. It was co-written and co-produced by American producer Pharrell Williams.

"Give It 2 Me" received positive critical reception. USA Today's Elysa Gardner called the song "thumping" and "breathless," naming it one of the standout tracks of the album. Rolling Stone described Give It 2 Me as a "thumpy self-empowerment anthem."

Chart performance

"Give It 2 Me" entered the UK Singles Chart at #73 on May 4, 2008, due to digital download sales alone. In the U.S., before its official release, it debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at number 57 as the Hot Shot Debut of the week. Before it was officially released in Canada, it debuted at number 8 and became the Hot Shot debut of the week. This caused "Give It 2 Me" to debut at number 39 on the United World Chart, weeks before its official release. In Norway the track took the 16th spot on the singles chart on downloads alone. This was also before the official release.

Music video

A music video for "Give It 2 Me" was confirmed by Madonna herself in her interview on BET's 106 & Park, when she stated that a video was already filmed with Pharrell. It was filmed in early April 2008 in London, and was directed by fashion photographer Tom Munro. Pharrell's part of the video was used during the performance of 'Give It 2 Me' during the Hard Candy promo tour. Stills from the video were released in late May 2008. The full video leaked on YouTube on May 31, 2008. But as per usual Warner Bros had the video removed. However, a high-quality version of the video is still available for viewing on perezhilton.com. Anyhow, the video's release date was pushed up to June 4th, 2008 in the United States and Canada.

The music video features Madonna singing in various back drops wearing some of the same outfits from the recent photoshoot for Elle magazine and also singing on a couch while Pharrell sings in some back drops with Madonna. Madonna also sings in a dance studio while dancing and singing in a black and white back drop. The visual theme and her style is that of classic late 60's/early 70's retro-chic exemplified with long loose curls, matte make-up and little to no make-up colour except nudes, beiges and light rose. Her wardrobe plays up her toned body but alludes to it with sheer loose chiffon sleeves and mostly black or white in the various outfit changes. She sports a wide brimmed hat throughout most of the video, something she hasn't done that often in any of her others. The editing for this video ties in with the song in many areas with cuts and speeds.

Many take this song to be her take on getting older and turning fifty this year. Her lyrics "Don't stop me now, don't need to catch my breath, I can go on and on and on; when the lights go down and there's no one left, I can go on and on and on" refer to her longetivity and her enduring strength in the pop/dance fields, as well as challenging others with the last line, referring to her being the last one left after everyone else has gone.
